Google is rolling out Search Profiles in Discover

Google has just officially launched Search Profiles within its app and Google Discover feed. This new format offers publishers and creators a centralised, customisable landing page, directly accessible from the mobile search ecosystem. What may appear to be a simple interface update is, in fact, a fundamental overhaul of the dynamics of visibility and user engagement.

Understanding the technical workings of Google Discover’s Search Profiles

In practical terms, Search Profiles take the form of mobile profile pages hosted at the standardised address [profile.google.com/@handle](https://profile.google.com/@handle). These pages feature a wide header banner, a biography, a direct link to the organisation’s main website, and a content aggregator displaying the brand’s latest articles, videos and social media posts all in one place.

Based on our analysis, this feature is natively designed for the mobile environment. It centres on three key elements within the SERPs: Google Discover feed listings, Knowledge Panels and a direct ‘Follow on Google’ action button. This subscription button helps build audience loyalty directly within the Google interface, thereby algorithmically increasing the likelihood that the advertiser’s future content will be proactively pushed onto the user’s home screen.

However, the Mountain View-based company applies strict eligibility criteria for access to these profiles, requiring creators and brands to reach significant audience thresholds on at least one major third-party social media platform. The criteria require a minimum of 100,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram or X, and 300,000 followers for TikTok.

Beyond clicks: The key challenge of ensuring the long-term viability of the brand and data

The introduction of this format comes at a time when traditional search models based on the classic list of blue links are giving way to feed-based experiences as well as increasingly interactive interfaces, as illustrated by the reference document “Blog GPT.pdf” or the study set out in the file “Blog GPT_2.pdf”. The challenge for our clients no longer lies solely in the one-off ranking of a URL, but in building a strong brand signal that can be recognised by algorithms. By establishing and optimising a Search Profile, an advertiser directly feeds into Google’s Knowledge Graph, thereby consolidating their overall thematic authority.

Furthermore, this centralisation enables brands to capture users’ interest even before they begin an active search. Google has explicitly confirmed that these profile listings do not act as a direct SEO ranking signal. However, their added value lies in brand recall and the frequency of organic sessions generated via Discover – a source of traffic that has historically been volatile but highly effective.

Impact on ROI and the balance between paid and organic acquisition

The integration of a ‘Followers’ ecosystem within Google itself requires tactical adjustments to acquisition strategies. The direct impact on CPA/ROI will be measured by brands’ ability to maximise a user’s lifetime value. A user who chooses to follow a brand on Google Discover becomes a qualified lead, regularly exposed to organic and free touchpoints.

This trend presents an opportunity to optimise advertising spend. By stabilising the flow of qualified traffic via a recurring organic channel, marketing teams can refine the targeting of their paid campaigns to focus on purely transactional, high-value-added search queries. In an era where artificial intelligence interfaces are tending to capture a proportion of outbound clicks, having a proprietary space that is validated and promoted by Google is essential for securing one’s share of voice.

The roll-out of Search Profiles confirms Google’s commitment to transforming Search into a comprehensive relationship hub where brand awareness and content quality take precedence over purely technical optimisations. To take full advantage of these developments and strengthen your acquisition channels, integrating synergistic strategies is a business priority.

Our SEO agency helps you optimise your organic visibility and maintain your search engine rankings in the long term.
