DeepSeek: the Chinese AI challenging ChatGPT

    06/02/2025 3 min. reading Leslie

Since 2022, the artificial intelligence market has been largely dominated by the United States. But recently, a new challenger has emerged. And it doesn’t come from Silicon Valley. On the contrary, it was developed in China. Just a few days after its launch, DeepSeek is already impressing with its exceptional capabilities. So how does this new Chinese chatbot work? How does it differ from ChatGPT? Ad’s up Consulting answers the question.

    What is DeepSeek?

Launched on 20 January 2025, DeepSeek is an intelligent assistant created by the Chinese company of the same name. As soon as it entered the AI market, specialists from around the world recognised its exceptional capabilities. So much so that it could even rival the undisputed leader, ChatGPT.

But before looking at the similarities and differences between the two intelligent assistants, it is worth revisiting the DeepSeek model, and in particular its specific features. Starting with its open source operation. It is based on two language models, R1 and V3, which anyone can modify. In doing so, DeepSeek benefits directly from improvements made by its community.

In addition to its operating mode, DeepSeek has surprised the world with its extremely low cost: $5.6 million (compared to $80 million for GPT4). To achieve such a difference, DeepSeek has taken advantage of existing technological advances in AI, Nvidia chips that circumvent US restrictions, and government subsidies.

What are the differences between DeepSeek and ChatGPT?

When you start browsing DeepSeek, the resemblance to ChatGPT is striking. Apart from the logo, everything is identical. The chat box in the centre, archived conversations on the left-hand side, the integration of Deep Think or Search features in the chat box… In short, DeepSeek looks more like a pale imitation of its American competitor. But is it just a Chinese knock-off? Or is it a real challenger to US artificial intelligence models? To find out, we need to look at the differences between these two assistants.

    Different answers

Although similar, DeepSeek and ChatGPT do not respond to user questions in the same way. Here are the main differences:

    • ChatGPT goes into greater depth in its responses.
    • DeepSeek is capable of providing real-time information without any problems (however, the Search function must be enabled).
    • DeepSeek still has robotic writing, whereas ChatGPT can be creative. With the American model, it is much more difficult to distinguish between human and AI writing.

    Chinese censorship

DeepSeek was created by a Chinese company. And since the country is not known for its freedom of expression, do not expect constructive criticism of the Middle Kingdom.

For example, if asked to explain the massacres of Uyghurs, it is reluctant to do so, to say the least. The intelligent assistant must comply with “the guidelines and regulations in force”.

    A 100% free tool

At present, DeepSeek is 100% free. This is not the case with ChatGPT, as you have to pay for a subscription to access the most advanced features.

That said, the Chinese assistant has only just been launched on the market. It would not be surprising if it became a paid service within a few months.

In addition to the price, we should also note the method of use. On DeepSeek, you must create an account. This is in contrast to ChatGPT, which removed this requirement in 2024.

    Limited functionality

ChatGPT has established itself as the leader in artificial intelligence, not only because it is the first conversational assistant to have democratised this use, but also because the tool is constantly offering new features, such as voice mode.

That said, the Chinese model already has many advanced features, such as PDF document analysis, table generation, and computer code writing (whether Python, HTML, etc.).

Perhaps one day it will also be possible to offer advertisements on DeepSeek, as with ChatGPT. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact our SEO agency to optimise your advertising campaigns.
